73 FM vans were built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan in 1976/77, along with ten spare guard’s modules and twenty spare luggage modules. An additional 50 vans were built by Daewoo Industrial Company Limited in 1980, and entered service during 1980 and 1981. The FM van weighed an impressive 30.8 tonnes when fully equipped.
FM vans where used on the NZR between the February 1977 and the 30th May 1987, there after guards vans were no longer used on freight trains. The FM vans provide a significant improvement over the older guards vans back in 1977. FM vans were fitted with passenger type high speed bogies, recirculation toilet, gas heater, gas hot water, gas hobs, and electric light. They had three compartments two for luggage and one for the guard. The luggage compartments had dog boxes for dog transport. At each end a platform was available, with a handbrake at one end.
FM226 has been restored to mainline condition. Have a look at the restoration page to see what restoration and maintence has been completed since it came to FDSRS.
